San Antonio Theft Crime Attorney
Speak with a San Antonio Criminal Defense Lawyer
Theft and larceny are interchangeable terms that both refer to the same
category of crime. Though some theft crimes are fairly straightforward,
others are more nuanced. For example, anyone who knowingly buys stolen
property or buys property without sufficiently verifying its ownership
can be charged with theft in the state of Texas. Though the punishment
that is handed down correlates to the value of the stolen property, a
theft conviction can occur even if the value of the property in question
is exceedingly small.
The classifications for Texas theft crimes are as follows:
First degree felony - For stolen property values in excess of $200,000
Second degree felony - For stolen property values between $100,000 and $200,000
Third degree felony - For stolen property values between $20,000 and $100,000
Jail felony - For stolen property values between $1,500 and $20,000
Class A misdemeanor - For stolen property values between $500 and $1,500
Class B misdemeanor - For stolen property values between $50 and $500
Class C misdemeanor - For stolen property values less than $50
In some circumstances, particularly if the defendant works for a government
agency, the crime may be bumped to a higher classification than the stolen
amount would normally dictate. If you are under criminal investigation
