Criminal defense: Man accused of assault in Texas

People's romantic relationships are often complex -- often beyond explanation. Despite this complexity, few relationships result in violence. Unfortunately, a man in Texas is likely considering his criminal defense after he was accused of shooting his girlfriend in the leg.

The shooting allegedly happened one morning in the parking of a medical facility where the alleged victim works. Reports claim that the 36-year-old man who has since been arrested and the woman argued the night before. As part of that argument, he allegedly took the woman's phone. At the time of the shooting, they were reportedly meeting so he could return the phone.

However, police say that when the woman approached, the man shot her in the leg. She was transported to the hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. The man was arrested soon after the shooting; police say that he was located at the apartment of a friend after his vehicle was discovered in the parking lot. He has since been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Despite how media accounts would make it seem, a person accused of a crime is presumed innocent unless and until proved otherwise. If sufficient evidence is not provided to remove reasonable doubt, he or she cannot be convicted. An experienced criminal defense attorney can ensure that the best interests of his or her clients are being represented in a Texas or federal court as well as work to negotiate for a plea deal, when appropriate, that could result in reduced charges or a more lenient sentence.
